Around 1986 or 1987 before we moved Student Administration to Campbelltown, I was Academic registrar of Macarthur Institute of Higher Education
The annual open day was held on a Saturday and we were lucky enough to have Premier Neville Wran as our official guest.
We were told by the Premiers office that his official car would arrive at 1.00pm and come to the Principals (Dr David Barr) front door. The entire Executive was standing out the front of Dr Barr’s office when all of a sudden the Premier walked up behind us and asked something like “are you expecting me”?.
You see Premier Wran had been there before and instructed his drive to park around the back and totally surprised and embarrassed us all by coming through the back of the building totally unannounced. But the day turned out well any way.
Perhaps not as bad as the gala opening of the institution in 1977 (I think), attended by Gough Whitlam and assorted dignitaries. The guests were served green cordial and biscuits!!!
I attended Milperra 1978-1979 the day that Neville Wran came to the College we only expected him, Milperra was in flood so Wran came in a helicopter we nearly cheered the roof off when Geoff Whitlam came in the front door,.. They might have come by car a short distance but they did get a helicopter I saw it we heard it.. I returned to do the social science. degree and later did a year of a masters in counselling but withdrew from that course.I worked for 22 years for facs yacs and docs and retired in 2002. Loved every minute of it have thought about doing more study even tho I am 71. Milperra have me a chance
me and my two very young children. I owe that College everything. I went to Campbeltown Campus the day the CAE was officially made a University. a good day.Milperra was the best Campus I reckon. I am trying to locate Dr Margaret Sargent does anyone know what has happened to her… is she still going ???she was a friend to me, I would like to find her again. dawnjude@dodo.com.au
